This concert opens with two English masters (three, if we include Holst's hand in Purcell's arrangements), who show the vivacity of British musical creation over the centuries. As a contemporary of Purcell's noted, this is "dazzling music", which fills the measures of any listener. But the same epithet could be applied to the theatrical edge of Rossini, the colourfulness of Glazunov, or the brilliant symphony that Mozart wrote at the age of 22 to astonish the Parisian audience with the virtuosity that was required of an orchestra and that will be well illustrated in this concert.
