Music lovers say that there has never been, in the entire history of music, a period as rich as the 20th century. From decade to decade, languages and possibilities are renewed and history is rewritten at a breath-taking pace.
This century is the time of the "isms", such as modernism, futurism, surrealism, expressionism, among many others.
This concert is intended to give a taste of that variety, passing through music from three different countries and three different decades:
From the Frenchman Jean Françaix we listen to music from the immediate post-war period, written in 1948, characteristic for its vivacity and exploration of new possibilities, although still based on a modernist language inherited from the inter-war decades.
Then, with the British Gustav Holst we go to 1903, to the dawn of the new century, still full of late-eighties reminiscences.
Finally, the concert is brought to a close with György Ligeti's inexhaustible brilliance and sense of invention, who, with his Six Bagatelles for wind quintet, rewrites his famous cycle of piano pieces entitled Musica Ricercata, which is a source of inspiration for artists of all genres, from Stanley Kubrick in Eyes Wide Shut, to Death of Danton in Nuno Cardoso's staging. This is music written in 1953 by a Hungarian composer who went into exile in Austria a few years later.
