Synopsis
The Strauss waltzes that from Vienna conquered Europe and became universal.
Programme notes
The Promenade 2022 concert season could not end better than to the sound of Viennese waltzes whose cadence still warms the hearts of all of us today. If at the beginning of their era they brought joy to the exclusive ballroom parties of the 19th century Austrian high society, they quickly spread to all social classes in Europe and reaching the whole world, already in the 20th century, through the Hollywood dream factory. Waltzes like An der Schönen Blauen Donau, known amongst us as The Blue Danube, by Johann Strauss II or the romantic duet from the operetta Die lustige Witwe, The Merry Widow, by Franz Lehar, not only marked generations but were also an inspiration for the success of the great composers of music-hall and cinema of the first half of the 20th century, like Cole Porter, Frederick Loewe and George Gershwin, each with their own unique aesthetic and musical language.
